The Healing Power of Water
In the past few years, many of us have experienced stressful times. We have become burned-out and exhausted. We could benefit from a recharge. Our minds are occupied with worries about the past or fears about the future. There is water all around us, but many of us do not know of its healing powers.
Perhaps you have noticed that after participating in a water activity such as swimming or sitting near a lake, you feel energized. Water in fountains and creeks can offer a welcome respite from the stressors of daily life. The sound of water and watching the light bounce off it can be meditative.

Many of us may unknowingly seek out oceans and beaches because being near water is naturally calming. Our brains are absorbing sensory input without being distracted by too much of it. This can carry us to a state of calm mindfulness. This type of relaxed presence has been proven to reduce depression and pain. It has been shown to improve sleep and sharpen mental focus.
If you are a city dweller with a dearth of water features, there are alternatives. Studies have shown that gazing into an aquarium can improve one’s mood and lower heart rates in as little as fifteen minutes. Virtual reality scenes that feature water have been shown to improve the viewer’s mood. Soaking in a bathtub can lower inflammation and reduce anxiety.
It is the simple things that can bring us to a state of peace and alert presence. Most of us do not have to look far to find a watery place in where we can lose ourselves. One of the most calming facets of water is its sound. You may find yourself in a state of anxiety or stress in the days ahead. Try listening to recorded sounds of rain or a flowing river. Let it absorb your attention. You may feel your stresses floating away.
